Planting Mangrove trees on the Kunthukkal Coastal area, in Southern Tamil Nadu
Coastal ecosystems, including unique vegetation and sand dunes, play a crucial role in preventing salinisation. But due to anthropogenic pressure this unique ecosystem has been dwindling.
🌿 Arulagam is planning to restore the coastal sand dune ecosystems by planting suitable species including mangroves and mangrove associates in Rameswaram Island.
🌿 It is noteworthy to mention that an exclusive nursery has been created at Kunthukkal village for this.
🌿 The project is being implemented with the help of United Nations Development Programme @undp and @teriindia - The Energy and Resources Institute with the guidance of Central and State Governments and with people's participation.
🌿 The second phase of the project was underway on 19th November, 2024, with the active participation of Mr. Mahendran and team and including Mr Kalaimani, the founder of Thiruvarur based Vanam Organization.
🌿 The project's first phase was initiated last July 29 on the occasion of the International Mangroves Day in collaboration with the Gulf of Mannar Eco Development Committee and by volunteers from Coimbatore based K'sirs International School. Mr. Jagdish Bakan IFS presided over the inauguration in presence of S. Bharathidasan, Secretary of Arulagam.
🌿 Volunteers of the organisation took part and planted about 1600 Mangrove saplings in Kunthukkal area of Mandapam Panchayat Union Pampan Panchayat.
🌿 Planting work is ongoing under the guidance of Arulagam Project Consultants Mr. Natarajan Ponnusamy with the active participation of Arulagam team, Mr.Mohammed Shahidh, Mr.Jabez John, and Mr.Javidh Miandhath and Neithal Nursery staff.
